I like the form for Order marking for Johnny Reb in Vol. 6 Number 3. I resonate all the reasons for why such a form could make the game work better.

Based on my experience, including some games at the recent GenCon/Origins Game Fair in Milwaukee, I would like to suggest three additions:

  • A column in which to note when a unit has taken its Opening Volley.
  • A column next to the existing "Arm." column, in which to note numerical weapon modifiers. In this way it would not be necessary in the "heat of battle" to convert armament type to a number.
  • A column in which to note the current morale points, as stands and regiments are lost. etc. I would actually suggest two columns for this:
      1) A column in which to make a mark whenever a stand is lost. When the entire regiment is lost, the cell would be completely blackened in. The marking for each stand lost could be a tick mark ("III" means three stands lost) or by blackening in the cell according to some pattern.

Keeping track of the effect of regiments test on the morale of regiments remaining in the same brigade is often done quite poorly; this would help a lot.

      2) A column in which to note the actual current morale points for the unit.

John Hill (who stopped by at Gencon/Origins) still believes that there will be a third edition of Johnny Reb "sometime". Perhaps you could interest GDW in including your form in that, or even in future printings of the current edition.
