Iron Brigade is a set of ACW rules which emphasizes morale on the battlefield. The morale rules are unique and require the players to do a fair amount of bookkeeping for the regiments which they command.

When compared to the morale system, the fire and movement systems are somewhat traditional, although complex. The rules contain numerous fire charts for various weapons, fire tables related to the charts, and protection, formation morale, and movement modifiers to fire. By locating the correct table (by applying the fire charts plus all appropriate modifiers), you cross reference the number of firers against the number of defenders to obtain the number of defenders casualties and the effect on morale. Movement is by a modified move/counter move system, and so does NOT have simultaneous movement.

Overall, this set of rules appears to be a fairly playable set of rules which requires the players to do quite a bit of bookkeeping. As a consequence, these are a moderately complex set of rules which should appeal to those who believe morale is the most important single factor in battle.

Iron Brigade is available from Mike and Mavis Willegal 3751 NW 115 Terr., Sunrise, Florida, 33323. the cost is $10 postpaid for the rulebook, or $25 postpaid for the rulebook and Macintosh computer program.
