Fire & Fury is probably the finest set of ACW grand tactical rules to come out onto the market in quite some time. Since I have a bad habit of tinkering with things I would like to submit some suggested rule changes to the readers. These changes should in no way be considered a slam on the rules; I just happen to think they improve the product. 1. p.25-Positioning Artillery ... Artillery may not be positioned in advance of the flanks of its parent division or corps. This prevents unusual activities by some players who tend to "charge with their guns 3. p.26-Road Movement ... A unit may not use x 2 road movement unless the exact route has been traveled by a previous friendly unit. This tends to prevent some "Panzergrenadier Infantry" attacks by units that would normally move cautiously because of traveling along unknown ground., This rule would not apply if the road was obviously behind friendly lines. 3. p.41-Charges ... Any unit that charges and is disordered by defensive fire does not make contact with it's charge target. A d10 is rolled and the unit is moved back that many inches from the charge target, even if it is further away than its initial position. Some players may consider this a drastic change but try it and I think you will like the results. It tends to force players to soften up their target with fire before sending the charge home. 4 . p.42-Charge Modifiers ... Eliminate the +1 modifier for Confederate charging. I personally have trouble with Rebelophiles who seem to think that a southern man has a genetic fighting superiority as soon as you step across the Mason-Dixon line. I'm certain that many serious students of the war could name just as many heroic Federal charges as Confederate.
