Notes from the Editor...

by Brian R. Scherzer

There is an address change that needs to be noted. On August 25th, we have moved to the following address: 4601 James Drive Metairie, Louisiana 70003 USA. Please make note of it, as the Post Office will forward mail from the old address for only so long.

This issue represents a departure from our usual format of trying to use a lot of shorter articles in one magazine. What has been included is some very fine material that includes a naval rules set, a guide to Union zouave uniforms, a very large scale scenario, and some shorter helpful articles. We hope you like them. We still find a shortage of material geared to On To Richmond and Stars 'N Bars. Those of you who utilize these rules are asked to try your best to send us information, scenarios and other material that would assist others.

There is no Letters to the Editor section in this issue because of our move and having difficulty finding everything. However, we have received some great mail recently, and those that are most interesting will find their way into the Winter issue. James Baker, of Falls Church, Virginia, was kind enough in his letters to point out that there is federal legislation kicking around that would ban lead "toys and recreational game pieces". There are two legislative bills, S.2637 (Senate) and HR.5372 (House of Representatives) that need our attention. Please contact your congressmen and let them know that adult-oriented lead figures should not he included in these hills and that new language should be included that allows us to maintain our hobby.

Richard Brooks, of Swansea, South Carolina, was the first person to correctly identify the general to the right of General Smith in last issue's cover photo - General Adelbert Ames. Everyone else guessed wrong as of the mail received by 9/14/90. We've done another one on the cover of this issue. A hint is that Roger Hunt's book would help you if you own it.

We have reached the crossroads of this magazine's existence in 1990. Each year, up to now, we have had more members than the year before. However, in 1990 our membership dropped about 10% from 1989. Should this trend continue in 1991, it would be hard to continue publishing The Zouave beyond that year. Less than 1% of the mail received is negative, so I have to believe that we are going in the right direction.

However, we really need your help in gaining new members. I have avoided advertising the magazine, and have studiously avoided conventions so as to stay out of wargaming politics. We need members who will be attending HMGS events, Origins, etc., to contact us so that we can give you flyers to pass 0111. Other than this, if each member would get one other person to join, we would not only survive, but we could increase the size of our magazine. Please help out! In addition, l)lease send your 1991 dues before the end of this year - too many people wait!

Finally, I can't tell you how pleased I've been with the selection of articles being submitted for publishing. Please keep it up. Also, remember that the last issue of the year will he sent out after the Christmas mail rush is over.

DON'T FORGET THAT WE HAVE MOVED!
