I recently received some sample figures from Russ Dunaway's Old Glory Miniatures. This company has been making a name for itself with its 25mm line of American Civil War figures (which I've not seen), and more recently with its limited edition Napoleonics in the same scale. They have now expanded into 15mm scale, their first (and, they say, their only) offering being the ACW line. These figures are some of the very best I have ever seen. The style is quite reminiscent of Freikorps' or Battle Honors' ACW lines, kind of skinny, but with a lot of detail and loads of character. They are slightly taller than Freikorps, but about the same height as Battle Honors or Essex. The average size for a foot figure is 15.7mm from the top of the base to eye level. The quality of Old Glory's lead is about average, not on a par with the stuff Essex uses, but not the brittle alloy Freikorps uses either. It bends easily. There were a few broken bayonets in the samples I received but this may have been because about fifty figures were packed into one small bag. There was flash on some of the castings, but it was easily removeable. The quality of the molding is excellent otherwise, with the details being crisply defined. None of the figures I received had a "double image" problem, which is what I call it when the two halves of a figure do not line up because the mold was misaligned during casting. The composition of these figures is their strong point. There is plenty of detail, including all the styles of facial hair that were the rage back then. The most amazing thing about this line is the variety. The catalog only lists four kinds of figures (Union and Confederate, marching and charging), but there are about 30 variations of each type. Not only do details of uniform, equipment, facial hair, hats, etc., vary, but the animation is different on just about every figure! I received 23 different marching figures, and found only two that were in the same pose (but with different equipment). At last, marching units that don't look like they're on parade! I am afraid that I cannot vouch for the quality of this line's horses, as they are not yet available. Nor did I receive any artillery, since such are not available yet either. However, cavalry and officer packs are scheduled to be released this summer. If the bewildering amount of variety in this line isn't enough to make you interested, consider the price. Old Glory 15mm figures come in bags of 100 for $15.00. Each pack contains "about 30 poses per bag, plus several wounded". This equates to 15 cents a figure. The new Essex figures are about 33 cents apiece. How long Mr. Dunaway can maintain this price is anyone's guess, but he is to be commended for trying to keep his prices low.
