Battle of Honey Hill

EDITOR'S NOTE: This scenario is part of the same campaign written up in this issue as "Chattanooga Choo Choo", and the forces would be identical to those listed in that article except for adding Confederate Partisan Rangers (140 men - Green). Simply use that Order of Battle for scenario with addition of mounted Rangers.

BACKROUND

In November 1864 a Union force under Brigadier Genl. John Hatch was ordered to sever the Charleston and Savannah railroad. On November 30th, Hatch was intercepted by Major Genl. Gustavus Smith and the Georgia Militia, with a battle ensuing at Honey Hill, where Hatch was beaten back. He made two more half-hearted attempts at cutting rail line, but by December 9th had given up.

TERRAIN

Mainly open with dense woods to the east and west. Light woods protect the Confederate right, and light works lie in front of most of the Rebel position. There is also a swampy area beside the Grahamville Road.

DEPLOYMENT

As per the map, Genl. Robertson, the 32nd Georgia, Partisan Rangers and the unattached battery of artillery trn up on the Grahamville Road at 4:15 p.m. (Turn 17). On the Union side, reserves arrive at the eastern end of the Grahamville Road, Sailors on Turn 3, the 54th, 55th Massachussetts, and cavalry on turns 5, 6 and 7 respectively, The 102nd US Colored Troops arrive on Turn 10 and, last of all, the Naval Artillery arrive on Turn 14. Rebel artillery can be placed anywhere on or behind the line of battle.

VICTORY CONDITIONS

The game starts at Noon and ends at 5pm (Turn 20). The Union must inflict a 60% loss on the Rebels and drive them from their works.
