ACW Society Update

Doing and Planning

by Brian Scherzer

It's a nice idea every now and then to let our readers/members know what the Society is actually doing and planning, and since the "Notes From The Editor" section of the magazine is limited in size, I decided to take this space to bring everyone up to date.

Our Shenandoah Campaign System has proven to be quite a success. We have just ordered another printing and have had a hard time keeping up with ordering enough counters and maps. Now we have released the first "module" of a planned series that will eventually encompass the Middle Tennessee, the Trans-Mississippi, The Maryland Campaign, the far western theatre (something that has been left unwritten about for too long in this magazine), and at least one other module. Each of these releases only requires that you have the original set of rules.

Advance The Colors has also done well, and we will hopefully have a 50:1 ratio rules set available some time in early 1991. Because of the lengthy delay in getting Advance The Colors out, we will not be taking pre-publication orders until the new rules set is ready to go to the printer. This new 50:1 ratio set will be designed with brigades being the basic unit. We would like suggestions as quickly as possible while these rules are still in the formative stages. Please write in stating what kinds of things you would like to see incorporated in the rules set.

Once it is at the printer, it's too late - and we don't like the idea of making several revisions, having buyers forced to come up with money every couple of years. Obviously, we'd like to get it right the very first time.

Our flag project has had very little in the way of donations from members. Most of the money accumulated so far has come from historians who have no interest in miniatures, from the editor, and a nice donation from Jim McCarron of Stone Mountain Miniatures. We're hoping for a better response from the membership before the year is Out. The project will take several years to complete, although our readers will benefit by the end of 1990 from inclusion of some of the flags in The Zouave. As stated before, the Society will be publishing several booklets of flags prior to coming out with a hardcover set of books. Treasure your booklets, as the hardcover edition will be limited to 1000 copies, many of those going to libraries, historical societies, and other institutions!

One major change that members should note is that all of these projects have overwhelmed our current accounting system, leading to us having formed a corporation as an umbrella organization.

Please make note of the following: All checks for The Zouave or any other publications put out by the ACW Society should now be made out to I.H.P., Inc.

We have some tremendous articles coming up before the end of the year, including a grand tactical rules set and a set of naval rules. We also have an article in the next issue giving details of the various Union zouave uniforms that existed during the Civil War, and several fascinating scenarios.

Our wants are still many. We have a desperate need for quality articles on uniform information, especially if combined with artwork (although we'll accept info without art). We also need a reliable artist for some of the illustrations planned for upcoming issues. Finally, we still lack good material on many of the Confederate regiments and brigades, including such favorites as Hood's Texans, Barksdale's Mississippi Brigade, and Forrest's Cavalry. Ante up guys!
