New Flag Illustration Project

The last time we requested member donations was to help us complete the illustrations of the flags contained in the vault of the Confederate Museum in New Orleans. The response was overwhelming, allowing us to accomplish a project of historical significance, especially considering that most had never been published before.

Our newest project makes that one seem simple by comparison. We intend on gathering information, drawings, and photographs on every Civil War flag known to exist! To accomplish this, we are contacting every state historical society, war museum, and known private flag collector in our search for surviving documentation. Each flag will then be illustrated for a series of books entitled, Flags of the American Civil War.

As you can imagine, the costs of such an undertaking are tremendous. We will have to pay for film, film developing, archivist time, and artwork in order to accomplish our goal. The estimated cost from beginning to completion is expected to run about $10,000.00! You might feel that someone else should pay the "freight", but we have to begin with you. Please understand that many of these relics are quite deteriorated already, and are getting worse with time. In twenty years, we will have lost the historical heritage that many of these flags represent. The cost of preserving a single flag is at least $3000.00, a sum of money that prohibits most museums from saving the delicate silk banners. If the project is not done NOW, there will he no tomorrow!

Expected to take several years to complete, ACW Society members will benefit by having the flag illustrated in The Zouave as they become available. The editor has become the first donator, giving $1000.00 to begin the work. Every contributor of $10 or more will be listed (without $ amount) in the set of hooks once they are published. Please send whatever amount you can afford! Checks should be sent to the ACW Society address, made payable to "ACW Society". You should make a notation at the bottom of the check "Flag Project Donation". Nobody else has been willing to do this sized project your help is needed!
