Notes from the Editor...

by Brian R. Scherzer

The format change in the last issue led to more complimentary mail than any previous issue. I'm glad to see that so many members approve of our new style. For those of you who asked, yes, we do get more words per page with the new type style (approximately 25% more). Having now "spiffied" up the way the magazine looks, my goal emphasis will be on making sure that the content of The Zouave continues to improve.

I would like once again to apologize for the fact that not everyone's letters to the editor get printed. We receive a lot of mail and we have only one page to use. More space than that takes away from the amount of other material that can be printed. Every letter received is read and thought about, even if it doesn't make it to The Zouve.

I am pleased to make two announcements, which, in my opinion, are of great importance. The first is to tell you of the formation of an honor society to award those people whose literary published works add to the general knowledge of our Civil War. It takes a lot of work to write a good article or book, and authors who undertake such tasks should be recognized for their efforts. The Society of American Civil War Historians, a branch of the ACW Society, has been registered as an honor society to award certificates of Fellowship and Associate Fellowship for literary merit. To become a Fellow of the Society, a person must have published at least three articles or one book of historical importance as defined by the Fellowship Board of Directors. To become an Associate Fellow, an author must have published at least two articles that add to the overall knowledge of the Civil War, or have been responsible for creating a service for those who enjoy and study the war (example being Chuck Kroeger, a was the game designer for several ACW computer simulations). To apply for admission to the Society, simply send photocopies of the articles being submitted for review, along with the title page and table of contents page from the publications that the articles appeared in. Book authors need to submit the title and Library of Congress number for their book. Individuals do not need to be members of the ACW Society to qualify.

The second announcement regards the beginnings of another flag project, this to be the most ambitious undertaking of its kind. Our inclusion of flag illustrations has been the best received feature of The Zouave for over a year now, proving an avid demand exists for further studies. I am hoping to present the largest grouping of flag illustrations and groupings to ever appear in one source. The current plan is to contact every state historical society and Civil War Roundtable, pins known collectors, to gather photographs and drawings of all known Civil War flags. These will appear in our magazine, and will ultimately be published in book form to satisfy the needs of libraries, museums, and historians. We need a lot of donations to help pay for film and developing costs, plus artist fees and other expenses. Please see the more in-depth discussion on this topic on page 4.
