Left: Lt. Col. Henry Dutton, who was promoted from Captain to Major to Lt. Col. by 1863. He commanded the regiment art 3rd Winchester, with Col. Thomas leading the brigade, and had his arm shattered during the battle. Right: Capt. George O. Ford, who led Co. K at 3rd Winchester. He was wounded there and at Cedar Creek one month later.
1st. Lt. Perry Porter, captured at Des Allemands, LA, then paroled, and then wounded in the leg on June 14, 1863 in the assault at Port Hudson. Porter was again wounded in the leg at 3rd Winchester, followed by a permanent loss of hearing in the right ear when a shell exploded near his head, knocking him over at the Battle of Cedar Creek.
Left: Corp. James F. Black of Co. I had been promoted from private prior to 3rd Winchester, only to be killed in the fighting on Sept. 19, 1864. Right: Sgt. Kirk F. Brown of Co. A was in the thick of fighting at 3rd Winchester. He later shot a confederate who had attempted to capture the regimental colors.
Sgt. Rufus Thorn was severely wounded at 3rd Winchester, but survived, mustering out on June 28, 1865 to return to Vermont.
