Editor's Notes...

by Brian R. Scherzer

This issue presents the first of several articles and scenarios on one of the least publicized, but quite important, campaigns of the Civil War — the 1864 Shenandoah Campaign, fought by Sheridan for the Union and Jubal Early for the Confederates. The battle of Cedar Creek is highlighted herein, with the 3rd battle of Winchester (Opequan) and Fisher's Hill coming up in later issues. Each of the battles presents several opportunities for both large and small scale scenarios, making it perfect for our uses.

I want to thank our membership for their continued support in writing good articles for this magazine. Some of the works have not yet been published, possibly leading some authors to feel that their writing is not appreciated. Nothing could be further from the truth. It is simply a matter of space per issue and trying to have each magazine interesting to all readers. We publish material essentially in the order it is received. Unless you get a "rejection letter", feel assured that your material WILL be published. Please continue to send articles — we need them! It has been a blessing to me to have reserve articles, a sign of a healthy magazine.

I have refused to carry articles or letters recently that are negative in tone towards certain rules sets. It is my opinion that an "elitist" attitude is quite negative for the hobby and ACW gaming in particular. Each rules set has its supporters and detractors, but the important thing to realize is that all have their niche and are fun to play. Whether you are an historian or simply a "weekend warrior", we welcome you with open arms. The fact that you are interested in the Civil War is all that matters to me. THE ZOUAVE is meant to be your publication, and if we are not meeting your needs, I want to know about it and receive suggestions for directions that interest you.

Finally, the Winter issue, due out by the end of the year, will be sent out January 15th to avoid the Christmas onslaught of mail. Over the past two years we have found that too many copies never make it to their owners because they get "lost in the mail". We do ask that you consider sending in your dues now, as many members delay for months. This presents us with an accounting nightmare. Special rates for Charter Members end this year, so all members need to pay the rates listed above. The good news is that we don't foresee any price increase for at least two years. If we get 100 more members, there will be 4 more pages per issue at no increase in price! Quantity lowers cost in printing. Enjoy this issue and please write to let us know what you want in The ZOUAVE!
