Dear Brian, Thanks to all for selecting Pegram's Farm for the "Best ZOUAVE Scenario of 1988" award. A little pat on the back and recognition is much appreciated by those who labor primarily out of love for a subject. Though self—serving for me to say so, it should be noted that there was some stiff competition! I can clearly see that there are many brothers out there laboring hard to interpret history on the gaming table. Ryan Toews' Piedmont scenario in the Spring 1989 issue was superb. I have long admired Ryan's work in THE ZOUAVE. Rod Thayer's "Orphan Brigade" article and scenario in the same issue will be hard to beat in '89. Fired up by Rod's work, a friend and I engaged the Kentuckians on the tabletop several nights ago and had a great time. The poor devils were, however, driven from the field in confusion. Brian and Clay must be commended and recognized for the extreme effort required of them to get THE ZOUAVE off and running in the first place. The format is exactly what many of us who have interest in history so intertwined with interest in gaming that we have difficulty separating the two, have been looking for. It now looks like THE ZOUAVE is firmly on its feet. With help from the talented writers and scenario designers who now seem to be rallying to the colors, I can see no reason why THE ZOUAVE should not develop into the leading historically oriented wargame publication in the land. The Spring issue was overall your best to date; certainly better than any other ACW or wargame magazine issue I've seen lately. I am honored to have perhaps helped a little (though not enough) to get the ball rolling. I plan to submit another scenario soon. My insurance career has me very busy lately. Writing anything not work related has been most difficult. This situation should correct during the next few months and I will then get back to my favorite pastime, designing historical scenarios for THE ZOUAVE. I have the honor to be, generals, with great respect, your most obedient servant,
[Editor's Note]: Thanks for the praise, both to the editors and to the people who devote much labor in contributing articles. Your winning the award was quite deserved, as shown by the voting of our members. For those who don't know, Dean was an historical consultant for the JOHNNY REB rules set. His knowledge of the Trans—Mississippi area of conflict is especially impressive. I personally welcome any articles or scenarios that time permits Dean to write! Dear Brian, I hope to go to the USA in July and hope that you can mention this in THE ZOUAVE, as some contacts would be of great help. I would like to visit many of the battlegrounds, etc. Edward McKie [Editor's Note]: If any of our Yanks and Rebs have some time to show a member from overseas the local sights in your area, please write to Mr. McKie. It is important for members to share their knowledge and assist ACW enthusiasts to better understand our Civil War....especially those from other countries.
