Brig. Gen. Alpheus S. Williams. Commissioned a Brig. Gen on Aug 9, 1861 and commanded a division during the Shenandoah Campaign of 1862 and at Cedar Mountain. As part of XII Corp, he commanded the corp for a short time when its corp commander, Gen. Mansfield, was killed at Antietam. Performing well at Gettysburg and Chancellorsvile, Williams was transferred west when the XI and XII Corps were consolidated into the XX Corps, Army of the Cumberland. He went on to fight at Atlanta and Carolina Campaigns and Shermans March to the Sea. This previously unpublished photo was purchased by the editor from Henry Deeks, photo dealer, several years ago.
