Dixon 25MM ACW Figures

Review

By Brian Scherzer

Dixon has released their ACW 25mm range of figures, which can be bought through Wargames, Inc. (see their address in the review above). There are a total of 24 infantry, 2 cavalry figures, and a choice of 2 horses available. Yet this is misleading due to the fact that each figure comes with a choice of at least 10 heads with different hats and facial features. One would have to look at the catalogue sheet to fully appreciate the variations.

If you are at all familiar with other Dixon 25mm lines, the ACW figures are among their best castings. Figures are almost entirely free of flashing, are well posed, and are cleanly defined. Detail is not as evident as with the Front Rank ACW figures, but they are well enough detailed to allow for some fine painting. In fact, I prefer them to Front Rank. In looking for negatives, the worst things that I could say are that some of the rifles are a bit short (a problem on every ACW 25mm line that I've seen) and, on some of the bodies, the heads appear a little large .... but there are no dwarves in the lot.

The horses and cavalry are extremely well done, fitting together quite well in terms of action and dimensions. The drummer boys are indeed depicted as boys, and the infan try poses allow for quite varied units, especially when considering all of the different heads available. There are a number of zouave poses with different styles of hats, wearing baggy pants, vests, and gaiters. These, combined with the other figures, are capable of constructing any regiment within reason.

I don't know how popular 22mm and 25mm ACW gaming is anymore, but these figures are worth painting for a diorama, if for no other reason. There were no broken guns, bayonets, or legs on any of the sample figures, and the metal does seem very durable. Combined with the 25mm Revo flags, Dixon Civil War figures are hard to beat. I strongly suggest that, if interested in 25mm figures, you would be well served to request a catalog from Wargames, Inc. to see them for yourselves. You won't be dissapointed!
