Letters to the Editor

by the readers

Dear Brian,

Just dropping you a line to say a job well done. I've enjoyed my Ist year subscription and have enclosed my renewal. Can I obtain Volume I, or is it not in print? If so, what is the cost?

Paul R. Petri / Schaumburg, IL

(Editor's Reply): We have gotten a lot of requests for Vol. I of The Zouave. We only have six regular copies of Vol. I, numbers 3 and 6 left, and no regular copies of the others. We can provide photocopies, however, and the cost would be $18.00 for U.S. members for the entire volume (6 issues).

Dear Sirs,

As an historian specializing in the Civil War I feel I should point out an error that most in the hobby, including The Zouave, commit. What you refer to as the "Stars N' Bars" in your flag descriptions and what also graces the cover of the game by the same name is incorrect. The flag, consisting of crossed blue lines in the shape of an "X" on a red field, is not the "Stars N' Bars" as most believe, but is actually the Confederate battle flag adopted in 1861. The "Stars N' Bars" consists of 3 horizontal bars, one white flanked by two red. The upper left is a blue field containing 7 stars in a circle. Today the Confederate battle flag is almost always incorrectly referred to by the wrong name. I hope your readership will begin to pass the word and clarify this misconception that has become a common misnomer.

Jeffrey S. Kennedy / Lansing, MI

(Editor's Reply): Whoops!! You're quite right. All right guys, spread the word!

Dear Brian,

Keep up the good work. Does anyone know anything about Smoketown Hospital beyond what is in Battles and Leaders ? I have a letter written there from 1862.

G.W. Dunbar / England

(Editor's Reply): I couldn't find anything. If any of our members know something, please write in and we'll print it or send it to Mr. Dunbar.
