Notes from the Editor...

by Brian R. Scherzer

The ACW Society has now entered its third year publishing THE ZOUAVE. The success experienced so far has, in large part, been due to the submission of quality articles by our members. However, not wanting to be complacent, I plan on striving even harder this year to make THE ZOUAVE a better magazine. Hopefully, this issue will start a trend towards publishing articles that can assist all ACW gamers, regardless of the rules used. In these pages are a history of the Orphan Brigade, a scenario for JR players that includes the Orphans, a scenario for any rules set on the battle at Chickamauga centering around the Orphan Brigade, flag illustrations for the brigade, and an article written many years ago by a lieutenant from the 4th Kentucky about his experiences at Chickamauga.

The concept of combining brigade histories with flag illustrations from the regiments of those brigades, plus battle scenarios, seems to be a favorite feature now with our readers. Our next issue will highlight the Confederate Missouri Brigade and, space permitting, the Union Irish Brigade. Any members who would like to write scenarios for these brigades are invited to do so as quickly as possible. If it's good we'll print it!

Magazines tend to function on the basis of reader input. This issue, for example, was organized as a response to several letters, particularly one from Don Hlohinec representing his wargaming club's views, that stated a desire to see less articles that deal with specific rules sets, and more material that can be of interest to ANY Civil War gamer. Of course, we still print what we get, but his and the other letters of similar mind influenced a desire on my part to meet stated needs. Please let us know what you want to see... the squeaky wheel gets the grease!

There were so many letters to the editor that I couldn't possibly print them all. My thanks go out to all of you who wrote such encouraging notes. They make the job more enjoyable and feed us energy to try even harder to put out a quality magazine.

On a final note, we hope that you have enjoyed the flag illustrations, from the collection from the the Confederate Museum in New Orleans. We conclude with Part III in this issue. We're proud to have been able to publish many of them for the first time. It all adds to our knowledge.
