Building Tabletop Tents

By Ryan Toews

This is, admittedly, not an article in the true sense of the word, but a way of assisting gamers keep down costs and at the same time build on the available scenery for your table top. For anyone who wants to refight an action that involves an army encampment one thing is always needed - tents. If the battle in question is one such as Shiloh, lots of tents will have to be found. Although resin castings of tents are available these can become quite expensive if a large number are desired. Therefore, THE ZOUAVE now offers an alternative to its readers. Below are 15mm (1/120) plans for two of the more common tents of the Civil War; the large "wall" tent and the more widely used "wedge" tent. Even if you prefer the wedge tent design for the majority of your troops, the wall tent makes a perfect home for your general staff or headquarters.

To construct these models, photocopy the plans onto 4 x 6 inch index cards. Most photocopying centers will be able to do this at a fairly reasonable rate. If you game with 20mm or 25mm figures, enlarge the plans 133% or 166% respectively. Once you have the necessary number of photocopies of the plans the work begins, but is fairly simple.

Cut along the solid lines except for the line delineating the front entrance flap (leave this line for after the tent is complete). The second step is to fold along the dotted lines after very lightly scoring these lines with a sharp blade, but do not cut all the way through the card! Glue the tent together and after it has dried, cut open and fold back the front flap(s) as desired. Your final task will be to paint the tents as desired.

It should be mentioned that Stone Mountain Miniatures offers an excellent supply set of barrels, boxes, and sacks which, when scattered about, add a real finishing touch to any army encampment. Of course it's still up to you to "sneak" your troops up to the camp for a surprise attack!
