Braxton Bragg

The Color of His Coat

by Brian R. Scherzer

For anyone masochistic enough to paint a personality figure of Braxton Bragg, the correct coat color is a dark bluish-gray (steel blue almost) with cuffs and collar of dark navy blue. All trim is silver in color, as are the general's collar ensignias. His scabbard was black, sword pommel silver, and the pants dark gray with stripes of either yellow or white. The uniform is on exhibit at Confederate Memorial Hall in New Orleans.

Many Confederate officers and generals wore dark gray coats with a slightly bluish tint to them. Frequently, they would wear a yellow sash, but such could also be cream colored or even red. Another color frequently worn by officers was sky blue.
