I thank all of those who have written to me with their kind words about our magazine. Membership has been steadily increasing, with quite a number of Europeans joining now. I do read all letters sent, but ask that those wishing for a reply send a self addressed and stamped envelope (2 international postal reply coupons for overseas mail) to help us hold down costs. Replying to mail in August cost over $20! For a little "chest thumping", the Library of Congress sent us a letter asking us to send them copies of THE ZOUAVE for their collection. I assume it means that we're doing a good job if only we can keep them from putting our magazine next to the Jimmy Carter papers! The last issue was a month late in being sent out due to the new format being used. Even then, we didn't have time to make the last few pages quite the same quality as the rest of the magazine, but as of September 3rd (today), we have only received one complaint. Thank you for being understanding! There have also been no complaints regarding our plan to become a quarterly magazine next year. The truth is that we were budgeted to put out 6 issues per year of 16 pages each. Obviously, we had problems getting enough into that space and exceeded it by quite a bit. Using the new type allows us to put more info in the same amount of space - eight typewritten pages become five pages in the new format. Although this magazine is smaller in number of pages, it actually contains more words. I am extremely pleased to announce a project of historical significance. The Confederate Museum in New Orleans has granted us permission to photograph their collection of Confederate flags, most of which have never been displayed. There are 95 in all, most being regimental, battery, or company flags. We can use the photographs, but many of the flags are shot up pretty badly and we would prefer to have them illustrated as they would have appeared early in the war. To do this we need a volunteer with artistic talent who has the time and expertise to draw the flags in groups over the next year. We cannot compensate other than to prominently place the artist's name in the article and to give the person some authentic Civil War photographs. Because of the fact that the composition of these flags has never before been published, we anticipate a number of requests from other publications to reprint the material. The artist would receive credit for these as well. Anyone interested in working on the project should send an illustrated sample of their work (prefer a flag sample). We are looking for something on par with the Iron Brigade flag drawings. Speaking of flags, it is starting to look like La Legion has gone out of business. I have no proof of this, but it sure seems hard to get anything in the way of ACW flags. If they've gone out of business who will make some flags (Dave Babb, are you listening)?
