On the 13th of September, 1662, Major General Sterling Price, commanding the Con federate Army of the West, occupied the northern Mississippi town of Iuka. This was done in an attempt to bring pressure against Grant's forces in West Tennessee and thus hopefully forestalling Grant from reinforcing Buell in Middle Tennessee. Grant, perceiving an opportunity to crush Price, advanced with two. columns towards Iuka. The first column arrived west of the town on the night of the 16th. Rosecrans, leading the second column, was delayed and only can the afternoon of the 19th did his for approached its objective. Well informed by his cavalry of Rosecrans' movements Price dispatched two brigades under Brigadier General Henry Little to meet this Union threat. At 4:00 p. rn. the skirmishers preceding the Northern divisions advanced up the crest of a ridge just to the south of Iuka. There before them, just beyond a screen of grey—clad skirmishers, was a rebel brigade drawn up in line of battle. In the ensuing struggle the Confederates pushed the Federals back but as darkness approached the fighting died out inconclusively.
