Pre-generated Armies
Circa 1863

by Mark Piper

The following "armies" are based mostly on historical formations from the Gettysburg campaign, and therefore represent forces circa 1863. The aim is to allow players to deploy similarly sized groups of troops in small to large games. As such, these are not meant to be "army lists", but they give the player pre-generated historical formations, and in some cases, limited options to upgrade or downgrade troop quality, etc. Each "army" had been rated with a "handicap" factor. This factor is used to modify that side's victory points at the end of the game. Points are calculated as per the system described in an earlier issue for scenario design, with green brigades costing 3 points and crack brigades costing 5 points.

Union

Union Corps (Type 1) = 29 points
Handicap = + 1 point

    1 x E corps leader (4) 3 x Infantry division leaders (3) 4 x Infantry brigades, 8/6/4 (16) 4 x Corps artillery stands (4)
a. One brigade is crack, one green, two veteran.
b. Any two brigades can have exceptional brigade commanders (+2).

Union Corps (Type 2) = 32 points
Handicap = + 2 points

    1 x Corps leader (2) 1 x Infantry division leaders (1) 1 x E infantry division leader (2) 5 x Infantry brigades, 8/6/4 (20) 4 x Corps artillery stands (4)

Handicap = + 1 point

    1 x E corps leader (4) 3 x Infantry division leaders (3) 4 x Infantry brigades, 9/7/5 (16) 4 x Corps artillery stands (4)
a. Two brigades may be rated as veteran; the rest are green.
b. Any two brigades can have exceptional brigade commanders (+2).

Union Corps (Type 4) = 28 points
Handicap = + 2 points

    1 x E corps leader (4) 2 x Infantry division leaders (2) 5 x Infantry brigades, 6/5/3 (18) 4 x Corps artillery stands (4)
