Book Review by Paul Price
The Harper Encyclopedia of Military Biography, Caste Books, 1992, is written by Trevor N. Dupoy, Curt Johnson, and David L. Bongard. As you might expect from the title, The Harper Encyclopedia of Military Biography is an encyclopedia of military biographies. For those interested in the American Civil War, this encyclopedia contains many biographies which you would find of interest. The book contains short biographies of prominent American Civil War generals such as Grant, Lee, Sherman, and Jackson. Additionally, it includes biographies of such obscure generals as Samuel Cooper, and Benjamin Grierson, plus many others. Each biography shows the date and place of birth and death, military position, major wars, and a description (sometimes brief) of the person's military career. Additionally, some biographies give the writer's opinion of the subject person's strengths and weaknesses as a military leader. In general, the encyclopedia contains hundreds of military biographies from all ages of history within its 834 pages. Consequently, I would recommend it to those interested in military history, including the American Civil War.
