Forward the Colors

New Regimental Scenario Booklet

Review by Ivor Janci

FORWARD THE COLORS! as well as the previous 7 sets can be purchased through your favorite gaining retailer or direct from the inarketer, The Last Square.

Once again, the creative team of George Anderson & Ryan Toews (aka Potomac Publications) have released a new collection of scenarios, called FORWARD THE COLORS! This 8th set is for the Regimental level of ACW games (using rules such as JOHNNY REB, FIELDS OF HONOR & A NATION ON TRIAL, to name a few), and provides a wide range of battles in 32 professionally-printed, letter-size pages, with attractive cover art by Keith Rocco.

From the familiar First Bull Run (or First Manassas for those with Confederate sympathies) and Brices's Crossroads (or General Sturgis' defeat for those Unionists), to lesser-known battles such as Deserted House and Mossy Creek of 1863, these 12 scenarios will give gamers fresh new material.

For those not familiar with the booklets, each scenario has concise background history, special notes, deployment & terrain setup, victory conditions and the allimportant orders of battles. The last gives the name and a numeric rating for each commander of the Brigade, Division and Corps present, as well as the type of armament and morale/training rating for each regiment or battery. Plus there's a professionally-created black and white map per scenario, to aid in the setup of the forces and/or to provide entry information for any reinforcements.

Besides the engagements mentioned above, others included are: from 1862, McDowell & Oak Grove; from 1863, Big Black River Bridge & Stephenson Depot; from 1864, Chester Station, Yellow Bayou & Second Kernstown; and from 1865, Sutherland Station. Many of the scenarios take place in Virginia, so the 'Eastern' gamer will be most pleased. Once again, Messrs. Ryan and Anderson provide a valuable service to the miniature gamer, and we thank them for their hard work. Highly recommended to all ACW gamers.
