What's New

Above or Below the Mason-Dixon Line

by Ivor Janci

Let's see what's new in the last couple of months. Alliance Games Distribution had started to distribute the magazine to hobby shops, and more potential advertisers (like Joe Burgess' Old North State Company 10mm ACW figures) are enquiring into promoting their products in the magazine.

Let's welcome to the ZOUAVE a new advertiser: Toby Barrett's Thoroughbred Figures. You may remember Toby's ships gracing the cover of the previous issue. Toby has some new releases for Historicon, which we hope to review soon. Toby announced to me a couple of weeks ago that he had just acquired the rights to market the IRONCLAD game. His plans are to adapt the excellent boardgame to miniature gaming in the 1/600 and 1/ 1200 scales. If you haven't seen Toby's ships, and you're thinking of gaming the naval warfare of the Civil War, then you have to look at his line for they're the best out there.

Again for you fans of large 25mm ACW figures, Doug Carroccio, of MINIATURE SERVICE CENTER (U.S. importer of the REDOUBT ENTERPRISES' figures) has more men and accessories from the talented sculptor(s) at Redoubt. There's a resin and metal train and track, seated and crouching figures for the flatcars (or for any other flat surface for that matter), command for the Zouaves, and speaking of Zouaves, Wheat's Tigers in skirmishing poses.

Steven Phillips, of the FIRING LINE in Arizona, has Zouaves with Sharps rifles, and has more coming on the horizon. His first grouping of Zouaves are reviewed by Curt Campbell later in this issue. Hopefully by next issue, we'll be able to announce what else is new from this expanding line.

For you 15mm gamers out there, Joel Gregory of MERRIMACK MINIATURES, wrote to me this week to say that he'll have fortifications available. Fort Fisher perhaps? He also sent his latest ship offering: a wonderfully and cleanly cast resin and metal model of a City Class Ironclad. If your Union troops need fire support and they're near a river, one or two of these Ironclads would more than provide the necessary morale boost. Joel has email now: miniatureships@yahoo.com. Kudos to Joel for providing the 15mm gamer these fine ship models. Look for a review on the Ironclad in a future issue. I know that there are more manufacturers out there that offer figures, ships, rules and accessories to the gamer of the ACW period. I'm going to try to contact as many of them as possible. I would like to enlist the aid of you, dear reader, in contacting such vendors. If you have a favorite manufacturer, please drop them a line asking them to contact me at the ZOUAVE, and/or to send in samples to be reviewed. Curt Campbell has been reviewing a lot of 25mm figures, and would like it to be known that he'd love to review offerings in other scales such as 10mm and 15mm.

Finally, I'd like to apologize to George Anderson and Bill Miller, who had designed the McLemore's Cove and Secessionville scenarios respectively. Their scenar ios were to appear in this issue, but because of production limitations (examples: photography wasn't done yet, or maps need to be drawn), I chose to postpone them till the next issue. I have some ideas as to how to 'dress up' their scenarios, and need a little more time. Keep those announcements coming in, troops. Thank you.
