At The Movies.....

A Review of Spawn and Kull

Spawn:

Spawn met the big screen and should have stayed in the comic books. My first introduction into Spawn was from my wife and the mini series produced by Home Box Office. When I heard of the movie version I thought it should be great." However, I was disappointed in the rather "cram everything into a space of two hours, throw in some special effects and this is the movie" aspect of Spawn. I don't know where Todd McFarland came up with this movie version but I think he should have stuck to comic books and the mini series on HBO. The special effects were rather interesting and well thought out, but the story line just wasn't there. The music that was picked for the opening and closing credits literally gave me a headache. I guess I'll never get use to heavy metal blowing full force in my ears.

Was it worth it??? I don't think so and recommend you wait until it becomes available on HBO or the Movie Channel save yourself some money and you can at least turn down the music when the movie starts. Better yet, go play a game.

Kull: The Conquerer:

In this movie we get to see Kevin Sarbo, of Hercules, more without his shirt than we ever did in Hercules. For an avid fantasy role-player, the trailers I had seen were exciting but the movie was rather lack luster. I felt as if I had opened a book in the middle and began reading rather than starting from the first page. It's too bad that the director didn't start the movie the same way a person reads a book, maybe it would of given me some clues as to how the characters knew each other before Kull became king.

Kevin did a fairly good job with the part that he was given and so did Thomas Ian Griffin, the main bad guy. Both did as much as they could with the rather middle beginning that the movie started out with. The special effects weren't too bad and not the cheesy effects one would normally expect for an fantasy adventure movie. Even the demon at the end of the movie looked really believable even if it was computer generated.

Too bad Kevin/Kull couldn't save this movie from the middle beginning that this movie had, I think he would of have a better start at a full length picture than what was given in Kull.

Editor's Note: The reason I review movies like this is because of their potential source for role-playing material. No movies that cannot or will not have this potential will be reviewed.
