Words of Wizardry

Part I

by D. Gene Frye

One of the contributors to Rolemaster Companion VII submitted a spell list tailored to a world where men and dragon are allies, (I'd acknowledged him/her by name here, but that sections was credited to TR and three of the contributors to this volume had those initials!).

At any rate TR's spells were all designed to help human's interact with dragons more easily. However, I believe that the dragon of such a world would have developed similar magics as a corollary.

I now present those very same spells to you....,

Mannish Typing (IU): Area of Effect: 1 target Duration: N/A Range: 200'
Caster studies the general type of hominid encountered (i.e., human, elf, dwarf, whatever). A hominid must be 'typed' prior to the casting of most other spells on this list.

Mannish Tongues I (U)- Area of Effect: self Duration: C Range: self
Allows caster to communicate in the native tongue of the 'typed' hominid: only basic concepts and ideas may be related, however.

Charm Protection (D): Area of Effect- self/1 target Duration: 1 min/lvl Range- self/touch
The self-only versions provides its caster with a +20 RR bonus vs the beguiling effects of a 'typed' target's speech or magical charm spells. The second version provides the 'typed' target with that same bonus vs the caster's own voice.

Mannish Lore (I): Area of Effect: 1 target Duration: NA Range: 100'
Caster acquire basic knowledge of one 'typed' target's gender, approximate age (young, mature, elderly), and a general idea of his/her magical abilities, if any.

Riddle Game (P): Area of Effect: 1 target Duration V Range:50'
Caster engages the hommid in a riddle game which lasts until one party gives a wrong answer, or can't answer. Both parties jointly determine the conditions and the prize before the game starts. This spell provides neither riddles of answers - it merely binds both parties to a set of inviolable, pre-determined, rules (GM's discretion).
