Fractal Spectrum Magazine

Gaming News and Press Releases

by Bill Brierton

Fractal Spectrum, the best of the alternate gaming press magazine, has bee acquired by Madhouse USA as of January 1, 1999, from its former publisher Fractal Dimensions. According to Donald JA. Redick, co-owner of Fractal Dimensions and former Editor-atLarge of the Fractal Spectrum, "Over the 1998 year, FS has been plagued by the slowing of distribution and bad printing. Coupled with some health problems that have been looming over my head, I decided to take Kerry Harrison up on his offer to buy the magazine, all the back stock and its subscriber list."

"Kerry has a sound plan for the future of FS. I'm sure he and Madhouse can get FS back on its feet," said Kathleen Seymour, the other co-owner of Fractal Dimensions. "The people who worked with us on FS are also willing to work with Madhouse. And they are some great people!"

Donald and Kathleen went on to say that, "Fractal Dimensions will still be publishing, but we decided to focus on other endeavors. Currently, we have finished the first issue of Altemate Visions, a comic anthology with four other comic book artists. Don will be doing more airbrush artwork and comic penciling while Kathleen will be doing much of the lettering and inking. We both will be handling the management of Fractal Dimensions as always. We still own the Gamelet line and the SORD RPG line so we are now out of the gaming industry. But after 19 issues of FS, we are still going to miss it."

Madhouse USA will be the source for the Fractal Spectrum back issues as well as future publishing and subscriptions. Kerry Harrison, the president of Madhouse USA, had the following to say about his company's recent acquisition. "We're quite pleased to add the Fractal Spectrum to our growing product line and we have some exciting plans for the Fractal Spectrum's future that we will be announcing at a later date, among our new plans for FS is to greatly expanded its scope to include international gaming news, a tasks which Madhouse is quite well suited for."

For those who are not familiar with Madhouse some background information may be in order. Madhouse was founded as a UK-based play-by-mail (PBM) gaming company back in 1992 with a goal of providing the highest possible quality games at reasonable prices and today is one of the largest PBM companies in the world with branches in the United Kingdom, the United States, and Australia.
