Ancients Association

Are You Interested?

by Tony Bath

A few weeks ago it was suggested to me that it might be a good idea if a small, regular magazine could be produced devoted to Ancient wargames, in view of the growing interest in this period. It seemed to me that there might be something in this ideal so I discussed it with our Editor, who should know better than anyone what is needed in the wargames world.

After some serious discussion on the subject vie came to the conclusion that something more than just a new magazine was the answer. Instead, therefore, my idea is. now to start an Association of Ancient Wargamers -- if enough support can be obtained. I have mentioned this idea to several others, and from each have got suggestions on the uses and activities of such a group.

To begin with, the Association would bring into touch all wargamers with interests in the Ancient period. It would publish a magazine, say bi-monthly, devoted exclusively to the period, it would enable exchanges of information on rules, uniforms, figures, etc; and, I hope, it would organise the occasional get-together of Ancient enthusiasts, maybe arrange a tournament. For all this there would be an annual subscription of, I would think, about a pound.

Now if enough people are interested, I am prepared to initially form the Association. I will arrange publication of the magazine, and I'm prepared to do most of the donkey work in providing articles on the actual wargaming side if I create some help in the other spheres of uniform details etc. Once the Association it on its feet, then if necessary a Committee can be formed to run it properly. But, and this is the big problem, in order to pay our way I reckon a minimum of 50 people must join.

I would emphasize that I think this is a thoroughly worthwhile proposition which could lead to a lot of interesting things. The Newsletter, excellent as it is, can only devote a small amount of space to each period, and is unable to deal with items outside the wargaming sphere. Similarly, our Editor is a very busy man and cannot be expected to spend a lot of time ferreting out information for people. This is the sort of thing which the Association I propose could do.

So, if you would like to see such an organization formed, write to me -- 11 King Edward Avenue, Southampton -- and let me know, wit any views you might have on the subject. If enough people ore interested, then I'll do something about it. I hope to hear from you.
