Forming a Napoleonic 20mm Army

Ideas

by Bill Gunson

The Scots Greys are in Scruby`s catalogue (misspelt, but there) and so are the Lifeguards. The L. G., of course, wore uniforms identical to KDG, Royals, Iniskillings and so on, so its only a matter of varying the painting.

The Light Dragoons are representative of all regiments, as are the Hussars. The Lifeguard figure also makes Hannover and Prussian Cuirassiers of the period, plus French Carabiniers (Cents Garde style).

As for infantry, well the French infantryman advancing (Russell Gammage) makes Prussian, Brunswick, Spaniard, and Nassauer without any conversion at all.

The British infantry make Hannoverians, of course, and French Guards make foot carabiniers as an addition. Scruby supplies riflemen, Hinton Hunt supplies a variety of figures, and I use his standard bearer particularly. The Gamma Austrian grenadier makes British guards (full dress) and fusilier regiments, while his Austrian line are perfect for Bavarians. And so it goes on.

French line paint up as Fusilier marines, and Saxons, and so on ad infinitum. I have no figure for French flanquers (short tunic, etc.), but it is not important.

My regiments are organised as follows: British, 30 men, 4 sergeants, 2 officers, 1 standard bearer. The regiment has companies of 5 men, 1 coy is a light coy, another 2 coys are grenadier coys, and the remaining 3 are battalion c oys.,

The French regiment is 45, with 3 battalions of 15 (3 toys per battalion). 1st battalion is a Chasseur battalion (e. g. Fusilier chasseur or voltigeur chasseur, as the case may be), and 1 coy of the Chasseur battalion is a flanquer coy. The 2nd battalion is line (voltigeurs, fusiliers, as the case may be, and the 2rd battalion is the grenadier battalion (fusilier grenadier - voltigeur grenadier, as the case may be,. Then in battle the chasseur battalions Cigh; as skirmishers, or form up with the grenadier battalion as assault battalions.

It provides an infinite variety of possibilities for their employment, a1 d cuts out a lot of this 30 versus 30 business all along the line.
