Summer Wargaming

by Donald Featherstone

One might assume that in the Summer months our wargaming activities would take a back seat -- I have hardly found this to be case recently! I fought a hectic battle with Tony Bath on Thursday last in which Ancient armies with o gel warriors battles as part of a campaign in Judah. On Saturday I literally fought for my life against the encroaching crowds at the fantastically-attended London Convention. I also fought a hard battle against Neville Dickinson. Peter Gilder drove back home with me and we fought all day Sunday in a three-battle potted campaign, then did the decider on Monday evening - as I did not finish my daily chores until late, the battle did not commence until after 9 pm and ended well in the small hours. Wearily gave Gilder off this morning; after thoroughly searching his baggage because of certain covetous looks at books of mine, and tonight Tony Bath comes down to do battle; Thank goodness I am going on holiday on Friday.

Apart from the pleasure of meeting people who had previously been only names to me, the prevailing impression I have of the Convention was the refreshing sincerity and earnestness of the younger wargamers -- typically shown by David Gibbons, Cameron Robinson, Malcolm Love and the other members of the Tidewater Naval Wargrames Association who put on a miniature sea battle for us. It is nice to see that the youngsters aren't all 'mods' and 'rockers':

There were many new names and faces amongst the Convention crowds - to all of them I am sending a copy of this Newsletter and hope that they will find it worthy of support so that we can put on better and more frequent events such as the one that filled Caxton_ Hall to overflowing on Saturday last. This is the only monthly magazine for wargamers published in the world - it has its faults often in a printing sense but more members pay for more and better style of production. So rally round and help the hobby by making it possible to circularise information and news.
