The Wessex Military Society

You don't have to live in Hampshire to bedome a member of this Society or to attend its meetings, field at the Polygon Hotel in Southampton (not far from the railway station). The speaker is entertained to lunch in the hotel restaurant and both members and guests may take part in the meal - at their own expense of course. At 1400 hrs the meeting begins in the Rose Lounge, where the latest military books and magazines are available for perusal. The lecture occupies until about 4.30, with ample opportunity for questions and discussion. The Society offers the following attractive programme for the coming year.

Sat. 9th Oct. Brigadier Peter Young, DSO. MC. MA, FSA., famed Commando leader and one of' Britain's most decorated soldiers of WW2, besides being founder and Captain-General of the Sealed Knot. Subject: "My Views on Minor Tactics" OR "Some Aspects of the Great Civil War".

Sat.1-5th Nov. John Keegan of the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst, talking on his stimulating, and much discussed recent book "FACE OF WAR."

Spt.11th Dec. Christmas Lunch - David Chandler, Deputy Head of the History Department of' the RMA Sandhurst, speaking on "The Battle of Sedgemoor 1683-1975"

Sat. 12th Feb 1977 - Maj-Gen B, P Hughes, RA,, international authority on artillery, late curator of the Royal Artillery Museum and famed author of many books, including the superb "Firepower".

Sat. 10th April, Brig. E.D. Smith CBE, DSO still a serving, Gurkha officer, 'Birdie' Smith is to talk on "THE BATTLE FOR CASSINO" at which he fought and about which he wrote a very good book.

Sat. 12th June - Major Gen.E.V. Strickland DSO, MM (R.Tonks) talking on "ARMOURED WARFARE" or "JORDANIAN ARAB LEGION." Strickland was a vistor to King Hussein of Jordan for many years.

Club members - annual subscription £ 1 and 50p per meeting. Visitors: 75p per meeting.
