AT THE ROYAL HOSPITAL, CHELSE In the late 1920's there were two veterans, both fairly hale and hearty - Private Franklin who served in the 52nd Light Infantry and was with Nicholson's Moveable Column formed in the Punjab which did much good work in the mutinous districts before joining the besieging force at Delhi. Franklin was among those who went through the Cashmere gate with a storming party after the gate had been blown up. He mentioned that they were wearing "slobs" and that liquor was exposed in the streets by the rebels to intoxicate the attackers; he was wounded in the leg by a musket-ball. In his 91st year, Sgt. Brereton of the 88th Connaught Rangers was one of the force left by Sir Colin Campbell under "Redan" Wyndham to garrison Cawnpore when Sir Colin advanced on Lucknow to relieve the Residency and bring away the women and children - a so-called second relief. Sgt. Brereton confirmed that the 88th wore red-coats.
