Marshal Foch

WWI Offensive

by Don Featherstone

In 1914 a leading French military leader declared: "When on the offensive, recklessness is the best safety" while Foch asserted that the chances of the attack were favoured by the deadly effect of modern weapons; he qualified this by stating "formerly many guns manoeuvred to produce an effect. Today, a few suffice." Marshal Foch's almost fanatical devotion to the offensive was not diminished even when parrying on the defensive and in the Summer of 1918 his aggressive ambitions came to fruition.
