Doug Johnson's article on Wargaming the Sudan Campaign stimulates further reading and the following extract indicates the type of war under consideration. "The Dervish commander, Mahmud, was captured at Atbara by the Sudanese troops, who were prevented from killing him although he was wounded in the leg by a bayonet. Brought before Kitchener, he was asked "Why have you come into the Sudan to burn and kill?" Mahmud replied, with a certain dignity, "I came because I was told -- the same as you."
