During the 100 Years War, little was heard of artillery in field operations, only surprise reaction being claimed for cannon that Edward carefully nursed all the way to Crecy. But in siege operations the power of the Cannon was steadily increasing, so that in the last years of the war it had a predominating effect in securing the surrender of defended towns and castles.

Although a former artilleryman, Napoleon failed to appreciate the howitzer as Wellington did, and never displayed any faith or interest in the shrapnel used against his troops in the Peninsula.
