Julien's Speech

357AD

by Phil Barker

On his approach to the battle of Strasburg in 357 AD, Julian made a speech to his men, in which he commented on the long march they had made, the hills and precipice in front with the enemy on top waiting, and the lack of water, and proposed camping overnight. Upon which, the troops insisted on fighting straight away which every historian since has quoted as an example of late Roman indiscipline.

If they had hone and looked for the battlefield, as we did, they would have found that it is 7 miles from Strasburg where the Romans started, is dead flat, and the Rhine is over more then a mile away with stacks of small streams running into it! Obviously, Julian was making a funny to encourage the troops, and everyone since has missed the joke!
