English Longbows and Cavalry

Firing Into the Brown

by Donald Featherstone

Edward I used archers equipped with longbows mixed with cavalry in 1282, and again at Falkirk in 1298. At Bannockburn it was demonstrated that cavalry alone could not defeat pikemen and that archers must be effectively supported by heavy infanrty. By the time Edward III invaded France the English tactics were developed. They were based on a successful combination of organised missile-fire supported by steady armoured infantry, Unfortunately, the victories of Crecy, Poitiers, and Agincourt led to later English commanders having a mistaken prejudice towards defensive battles. This tended towards immobility of thought and deed until at Formigny in 1450 and Castillon in 1453 the English infantry were soundly defeated.
