During the May/June 1942 operations in Libya, anti-tank artillery, which the Germans used as an offensive weapon, had a crushing superiority, for both the 50mm gun and the recently-arrived captured Russian 76mm guns were better than the British 2 pdrs. So far 8th Army had received only enough of the new 6 pdr anti-tank guns to equip the lorried infantry brigades and motor battalions and lacked time to allow training in thoir use. Rommel also had his magnificent 88's but the British still would not use their 3.7 inch anti-aircraft gun in an anti-tank role.
