British WWII 2-pdr AT Gun

Firing Into the Brown

by Donald Featherstone

For most of the Desert Campaign of 1940-2, the Allied infantry only had the comparatively puny and lightly protected 2 pdr anti-tank gun to fight off German armour. Sometimes it was carried and fired from a modified truck (a portee) for added mobility. Lacking range and punch it was no equal to the German 50mm gun mounted in the Pzkw III or the 75mm in the Pzkw IV. Even the 50mm gun could penetrate tank armour at a range of 1,000 yards greater than that of the 2 pdr. Admittedly the 2 pdr had a quicker rate of fire but this was no compensation in such open country.
