WWI Information

Imperial War Museum

by Clive Darke

"I have just received a letter from the Imperial War Museum in reply to some enquiries I sent them concerning 1914 western front warfare for use in rules. You may be interested in some of the contents:

"The usable range of a weapon is usually determined by the man using it, not the weapon. Less than 1% of the soldiers in any army are capable of hitting a target in action at beyond 200 yards."

Thus in one paragraph the for most authority on WWI has dashed the figure given in most books, that the B.E.F. riflemen had a range of 2,000 yards.! One short sentence destroys much theory on base sizes etc.

"Frontage varies tremendously with circumstances too much to cite any figures."

Granted that is hardly the same as Napoleonic when it comes to keeping frontage in the field, but A.C.W. fans could well take note. In the words of the prophet, back to the drawing board!"
