What Makes a Wargamer Tick?

P.M. Street of Southport

My wargaming activities have recently been stimulated by meeting a very able group of wargamers through an ad in the local paper. I went along to one of their meetings last week and within five hours I was in command of the Armed Forces of Syria! I with Jordan and Egypt am endeavouring to defeat Israel in a recreation of the situation of 3 years ago. An Umpire looks after the interests of the Great Powers, the Swiss Bankeg the World News Agency, etc.

Each side has a map of the area with all its forces represented by flags. When by means of "calling" two forces encounter each otker a battle is fought on the nearby board. Naval forces, planes, tanks, guns and infantry are all represented. Each country has a 'national economy' which allows it to purchase equipment from such powers as will sell it. In addition a 'manpower replacement rate' makes up losses to the infantry.

Headlines from the World News Agency. "The Assistant to the Israeli Ambassador to Turkey was today hacked to death by two Arabs with meat hooks. His body is being flown back to Haifa." "Boeing 707 damaged by bomb - 12 killed!" "Police post on Haifa-Tel Aviv Road attacked - two constables killed!"

The Arab terrorist/guerilla band A.F.L.O.P. (Arab Front for the Liberation of Palestine) working efficiently. At present considerable numbers of Israeli troops are occupied in peace- keeping duties!

Arab plans are still top secret and the Israelis have not given me their plans either!
