The French in Rome

1848-1870

The unification of Italy owed much to Prussian arms. In April 1866, Sardinia concluded an alliance with Prussia, and the defeat of the Austrians at Sadowa gave Venetia to the Italians. It was the Prussian victories at Sedan and Metz which compelled the French at long last to withdraw their troops from Rome, and brought an Italian King to the Quirinal.
