Military Festival

Hull, UK 1970

by Peter Gilder

Peter Gilder is running a Military Festival to be held at the Barracks and Drill Hall near the Centre of Hull on Saturday, October 17th next. Its unashamedly copied from Don Featherstone's a Waterloo Military Festival hold at the Duke of York's Hall, Chelsea on 20th March, 1965, which I think was one of the most enjoyable days I have ever spent.

The Battle will be the centrepiece with a modern and ancient demonstration games going on as well. The Army are laying on several things - Military band, weapons, vehicles, filmst etc.

Waterloo itself now has a main length of 21ft x 7ft with the French right flank an extra 6' x 6' (L shaped) which of course is the scene of the Prussian introduction. What I am doing is to fight the battle from the beginning on the main length without the extra piece on. After 15 moves we shall draw 'Chance Cards' on three cards of 10 the Prussians Army will be written. (Split as the Prussian Commander wishes) directly a card is drawn with the First Prussian force on the game is stopped. Everything marked up on the maps etc. On the day of the do we shall set up at that stage so directly we start the Prussians will be arriving so everyone can got into the act. Also it will enable me to write up the battle as it has been up to that point comparing it with the actual battle. This can be put up as an interest item for the general public.

We shall of course have some Trade Stands, it will be fully covered by Press and TV, it is probably the biggest thing of its type in the North. I have taken some time and trouble over the terrain etc. I am hoping it will be in the diorama class, and get some interest in it.
