The Tewkesbury Volunteers

1803-1805 Flag

by T.J. Higgins

Whilst visiting Tewkesbury recently I had a look round the ancient Abbey. Inside hanging high up on the wall was a flag, very old and tattered. It could just be made out as a Union Jack, I stood looking for some times my mind recreating the cause of its appearance. How many blazing suns had bleached its colours? How many musket balls had been fired at it and what deeds of valour had been fought round it? What devotion had ensured that it be returned to England to hang, like so many ancient banners, in our old Churches and Cathedrals? On the wall below this historic ragged and tattered piece of cloth was a small brass plate inscribed:

"Colours of The Tewkesbury Volunteers - Raised 1803, Disbanded 1805"
