WWII Training

Skybirds Searchlight Detachment

by James Slater

If your recent mention of the re-issue of Skybirds figures takes me back .... In 1938 my father set out to raise a Territorial Searchlight Battery. For his first paraede night there was no equipment whatever so we visited a toyshop and bought a Skybirds Searchlight Detachment, with working light. This was set out as a diorama, following the War Office manual; and was all they had for the first training parade only some 18 months before the war. For the benefit of the historians, the Battery was No.428. Their Drill Hall, built later, still exists at Hazelucks Green Road, Solihull, Birmingham.
