by Don Featherstone

Airfix Magazine July 1970 Contains well illustrated articles on Military Modelling on the Sd Kfz 233 and 263; The Seven Week War (conversions etc); Conversions in 54mm Scale by Roy Dilley -- this month Canal Corps 1884-5; Part 13 of The Carrier Story by Peter Chamberlain; an illustrated article on making Standard Russian Military Transport in 1:76 scale; the first of a new series of articles on famous warships plus all the usual correspondence columns, book, figure and kit reviews etc.

AMERICAN HISTORY ILLUSTRATED - May 1970. Contains a most interesting illustrated article an John C. Fremont, explorer and American Civil War General plus the diary of a soldier in the Continental Army of America.

THE BULLETIN OF THE BRITISH MODEL SOLDIER SOCIETY - June 1970. A "fat" issue probably due to the great support they receive in the form of adverts from commercial firms. Contains figure, plate and book reviews together with articles on The Hoplite; The Imperial German Army etc.

CIVIL WAR TIMES ILLUSTRATED - May 1970. Has a very fine picture cover of a gun team coming up through the mud and contains well illustrated articles on Fort Pulaski; and a Federal Cavalry raid into Confederate territory.

THE COURIER (Bulletin of the New England Wargamers Association) - Number 2 and 3. Number 2 contains articles on 18th Century Ships and their Uses in Wargames; Russian Napoleonic Standards; Rules for a Napoleonic Wargame; a useful article on Wargames Tables plus other features and a Recreation of the Battle of Busaco. Number 3 includes an article on Wargames Campaigns by yours truly; Colonial Wargames Rules "Egyptian Campaign 1880-1882"; Medals for Wargamers; a World War II Naval Wargame; German Mercenary Troops in the American Revolution; a reprint of an article on Solo Wargaming by Joe Morschauser; and a Napoleonic Wargame Battle Report.

DISPATCH No.50. As always contains details of the greatest value to military collectors such as museums, military music, regimental histories, new books, figures, prints etc. For 1 pound ($3.50) per annum one can become a member of the Scottish Military Collectors Society and receive this admirable magazine free of charge.

THE GAMES LETTER April 1970. An American non-illustrated publication that gives details of the contents of other magazines dealing with wargames, both board and with miniatures. It is always highly complimentary towards Wargamer's Newsletter! I notice an attachment with this issue concerning a most attractive sounding Wargame Convention to take place at Lake Geneva, Wisconsin on the 22nd and 23rd August next. Who knows, maybe one day Wargamer's Newsletter will run tours to such.

MODEL BOATS - July 1970. Contains illustrated article on H.M.S. Warspite and plans and descriptions of the Italian battleship Vittorio Veneto.

STRATEGY AND TACTICS - May-June 1970. Contains an article on the British 8th Army with a strong anti-bias. Details of the latest board games with a regrettable LeftWing slant. This magazine is to be the subject of a separate report by Keith Robinson.

THE VEDETTE - April 1970. The Journal of the National Capital Military Collectors. Contains articles on Indian Wars of 1813-1814; the Light and Heavy Cavalry at Balaclava; Rank in the Bavarian Army 1683-1718; plus other features.

THE WELLSIAN NEWSLETTER . Dedicated to Britains models, this is always a pleasant little magazine, produced with considerable affection. It contains an article on converting Britains plastics and other details of Britains figures.

SCALE MODELS - August 1970. Includes a lot of interest to the wargamer, including a review of the models of Miniature Figurines, plus well illustrated articles on constructing a 1/76 scale Panzer jager Tiger SdKfz 184; Military Insignia of Free French and Polish Forces World War II; and a most useful article by Peter Wilcox (B.M.S.S. trophy-winner) on "Making a 54mm Figure to Exhibition Standards".

SLINGSHOT (Official Journal of the Society of Ancients). In addition to a host of interesting minor features, contains articles on Greek Siegecraft before 400BC; Armies and Tactics, Weather effects on Galleys; Hoplite shield emblems; conversions; Castle Building; etc., etc.
