THE WRONG ASSIGNMENTS "Napoleon concentrated a powerful army near Charleroi (14 June), entrusting to senior command the Marshals Ney and Grouchy, neither of whom was particularly talented in the highest echelon of command; one of Napoleon's greatest mistakes was to use Davout and Soult in administrative posts." WELLINGTON TAKES THE RAP Wellingtons famous quote "Napoleon has humbugged me, by God!" was indicative of how he'd been caught by surprise. But again, it was really a matter of trusting the wrong man. "General Zeithen, responsible for the southern sector, had been lax is posting picquets and sending out patrols, and then in notifying the foreign commander, Wellington, when he did have vital news."
A SMALL ANECDOTE FROM MAJOR PETE PANZERI After Lutzen, 2 May 1813 Napoleon expressed great alarm at the sight of Ney. "My dear cousin! But you are covered in blood! The marshal looked down at his gory uniform. "It isn't mine, Sire." he replied calmly. "...except where that damned bullet passed through my leg!"
ENOUGH ALREADY! Only five of the old Marshall's agreed to serve in the new campaign: Davout, Grouchy, Mortier, Ney, and Soult. Mortier would, upon taking the field, immediatly become immobilized by back trouble. Upon Napoleon's return, seven marshall's agreed to make an appearance for old time's sake, but wanted nothing to do with more war: Jourdan, Kellerman, Lefebvre, Massena, Moncey, Oudinot, and Serurier. As for the old Chief of Staff Berthier, he climbed to the top of a tower at his castle in Germany and leaped to his death! TRAITORS! TRAITORS EVERYWHERE! General Bourmont, attached to the Army of the North, went over to the enemy with the entire plan of campaign just as it began! MILITARY INTELLIGENCE? Napoleon had in several campaigns failed to scout the enemy. In this campaign, his lack of knowledge of either the enemy's strength or positions was to recoil on him with a shock!
