John, Excellent analysis as usual. Some comments: I have read that Bin Laden supposedly financed the Taliban's acquisition of motor vehicles. Using these for strategic transport, the Taliban was able to concentrate forces and defeat the rival factions. If the Taliban relies on vehicles for transport, then they are dependent on the road network. If true, this implies that an interdiction campaign could have some military value. I've been reading the Guardian today. They report that the Northern Alliance is offering to work with the US lead forces. Are these guys that one can depend on, or will be left with Bin laden types afterwards, like we were in the Russo-Afghan war? Also, there are reports of Bin laden having extensive system of fortified man made caves, with multiple exits, steel reinforced, air conditioned, hot and cold mazzola facuets etc. Sounds like a SMERSH operation in a James Bond novel. In any case, that's a target the US could do something about.
