HMGS Yes? No? Maybe?

By Dave Pritchard

The question has come up, should we stay in HMGS? For those who don't know, HMGS is the Historical Miniature Gaming Society, it is the national parent organization, Tornado Alley Historical Miniature Gaming Society (TAHMGS), is a chapter of HMGS. TAHMGS though is an indepently registered not-for-profit corporation in Oklahoma.

In favor of staying part of HMGS:

    1) National Name Recognition among gamers.
    2) Discounted entry into many HMGS Conventions
    3) National Promotion of our events in chapter newsletters.
    4) Some support from venders due to name recognition.
    5) Entertainment value, similiar to "Roseanne" or "The Simpsons"

Against Staying in HMGS

    1) $1.00 per member annual dues, where is that money used???
    2) HMGS has interferred with local chapter operations, (though under present by-laws this is now illegal)
    3) There is no national newsletter or means of communication.
    4) Even though they have finally cleaned up their act by the removal of the national treasurer they have the history of being railroaded by a few loud personalities.

The National HMGS Board is presently discussing refunding the chapters their monies and disbanding to a lessor confederation. In my opinion we should take the money and run, before they change their minds, or a certain treasurer gets back into power.
