1942 Desert Battle of Rapid Fire

We fought another desert battle this time in 6mm between Germans and British forces. About 500 points a side.

It was a meeting engagement between two towns. The British town was easier to defend, but British armoured elements came forward to attack and an infantry company went wide on the flank.

The battle was fought over the British held town. The British portees, armoured cars and an A13 were taken out systematically over the first three turns. (there was some bad luck on the British side that was to plague the poor chap throughout the game.) The armoured cars fell first followed by an A13 then the portees. The armoured cars fell to the German 50mmm and 37mm guns, but not before getting a heavy damage on the German 233.

The advantage had gone to the Germans which meant now they had to put in an attack. Having played last weeks battle the Germans had seen what 25pdrs could do to an infantry company and were reluctant to avance in the open which meant going for flanking manoeuvres.

The flank held by a British unit saw several rounds of nothing as a company of Germans and a company of British sat watching each other. The assault finally was made by a German company with another coming up in support. Covering fire came from a 37mm AT gun, a German MMG and the 231 accompanied by the 233. A short fight saw a half company of British infantry annihilated for next to no loss.

The units from here then headed towards the British held town, few were to survive.

In the centre the remaining A13 took pot shots before lucky axis fire temporarily knocked it out, and concentrated fire then made sure it never came back.

The Mark IIIs crested a ridge line into fire from the 25pdrs and one was knocked out while they only gave ineffectual return fire. The next turn British return fire was ineffectual as was the German tanks return fire before pulling back. 3 British gunners were killed at some point during the tank 25pdr duels.

The infantry flank attack lasted a few turns killing no infantry but knocking out both 25pdrs for the loss off the 231 to Antitank rifle fire. Both companies of German infantry were almost annihilated both reduced to 2 men with an Antitank rifle. The 25pdrs were lost on 6s to the 231 and 233 though 5 crew survived from the two guns even getting kills as a rifle group.

German infantry from a 3rd company were shot to pieces while trying to clear infantry while supporting their own tanks.

The game went on to long, on equal points the Germans were never able to put in a good attack with infantry. The German main infantry attack went in from the wrong side and should have come with the tanks. The German 81mm mortar never even fired in the game.

When the game was called to a halt the British were left holding a town with an infantry battalion minus about a company plus some gunless gunners. Losses were a pair of 25pdrs, 2 armoured cars, 2 A13s several trucks and Bren carriers and a few pieces of support equipment.

German losses amounted to a Pz Mk III, SDKFZ 231, an AT gun crew, 2 half companies of infantry, plus men from HQ and support elements. Most of the remaining infantry was hidden behind a hill line within long range firing of the town. The heavily damaged SDKFZ 233 was retiring for a turn and two light mortars and their crews were making there way back to join this group. This would have taken about 5 turns avoiding British fire.

Given time the Germans could have kept firing into the town and brought down 81mm mortar fire supported by Antitank guns firing HE.

In fact other players got so bored they fought a tank battle off to one side between Italians and British which went in the British favour. Cruisers and Grants took out M13/40s and tankettes. Three anti tank guns left in the German held town would have been able to duel with the victors for a few turns pity as otherwise they should have been brought up to shell infantry in the town.
